Podcast 3 - How to Build Strategic Visibility in Your Career
THE CAREER PSYCHOLOGIST X DIAGEO · THE OWN YOUR CAREER SERIES
Build Strategic Visibility
Clarity without visibility is a career that stalls in silence.
Understanding your strengths, setting goals and developing your skills is half the picture of career ownership and by extension goal setting. The other half is making sure the right people understand the work you are already doing and where it is going.
This week in Episode 3 of The Career Ownership Podcast we discuss your zone of influence and your zone of impact. In that conversation we explore what they both are, the gap between the two, and how that gap is often the space where careers get stuck.
Closing that gap is not about doing more work. It is about making sure the right people understand your professional goals and are in a position to support you.
Making your goals visible requires four types of conversation:
Close partners see how you operate day to day. If your goal is progression, they need to experience you already showing up at the next level.
Door openers - your manager, sponsors, senior leaders - are not in your day to day. They rely on what you tell them. Brief. Clear. Outcome focused.
Your team feels the consequences of your decisions. If your goal shifts how you show up, they need to understand what is changing and why.
Your wider network needs the headline. Enough so that when your name comes up, the association is accurate and you are the one who shaped it.
Each conversation is different. But together, they build something that no single performance review ever could: career capital.
To get started, listen to the podcast, then write down four names, one from each group. Next to each, write what they need from you this month. Then pick the one conversation that would make the most difference, and have it this week.
Because a goal that nobody knows about is just a thought. A goal that the right people understand and experience in how you show up - that is a career in motion.
Next week we work on putting your plan in place through micro, mini, macro and maxi goals.
Aim for progress, not perfection.
I will see you next week.
